Video too large for a USB drive with free space? Check FAT32

Understand why a large video can fail to copy to a USB drive with free space, check FAT32, and choose a destination without risking your only copy.

A USB drive can have enough free space and still reject one large video. Check its file system as well as its remaining capacity. FAT32 has a per-file limit of about 4 GiB, so freeing more space does not solve that particular restriction. Microsoft's file system comparison distinguishes this limit from total volume capacity.

For example, a single 6 GiB video cannot fit as one file on FAT32 even with 20 GiB free. Several smaller videos totalling 6 GiB are a different case. This is an illustrative example, not a measured failure from a WarpFetch download.

Confirm the destination before retrying

In Windows File Explorer, open This PC, right-click the USB drive and inspect Properties. Record its drive letter, file system and free space. Separately inspect the video's size. Make sure you are checking the drive that actually contains your destination folder.

Read the error message carefully. “File too large for the destination file system” is a different clue from an out-of-space message, a disconnected drive or an access-denied error. If the drive already uses exFAT or NTFS, do not keep treating the problem as FAT32's single-file limit.

Choose the least disruptive solution

Start by copying the completed video to another suitable drive that already accepts large files and has enough space. Keep the source until you verify the copy. This avoids changing the existing USB drive simply to find out whether the file is usable.

If you need this particular USB drive, check the intended playback device's documentation before changing its format. A television, car player or other device may support a different set of file systems from your Windows computer. A successful copy on Windows does not prove the target device can read or play the result.

Microsoft lists much higher per-file limits for exFAT and NTFS than for FAT32. That makes them candidates for larger files, not a universal compatibility recommendation. Choose according to the devices that will use the drive.

Back up before any reformat

Formatting is not a harmless retry: it can remove the existing contents. Microsoft's format reference describes its effects. Back up the drive, verify that backup, and confirm the correct drive identity before deciding to format it.

If you are unsure which drive is selected or whether its contents are safely copied, stop at choosing another destination. This guide does not require you to run a formatting command to diagnose the issue.

If the playback device requires FAT32, a separately created smaller video or independently playable segments may be an alternative. That requires an appropriate media workflow: splitting a file into arbitrary archive parts does not make each part a playable video. Test the result on the target device. Do not assume WarpFetch provides local compression or video splitting; those capabilities have not been verified.

Keep download failure separate from copy failure

If the video finished downloading to your computer and plays there, a later USB copy error does not automatically mean the download failed. Preserve the completed file and investigate the destination first.

When saving a large download directly to removable storage, check both free capacity and the file system in advance. For uncertain sizes, use a suitable local destination with room available, then verify the completed file before transferring it. Finally, open the copy from the destination and check its duration and a few playback positions. If copying succeeds but playback fails, continue with the playback checklist. If you contact support, include the exact error, destination file system and file size so the two stages are not confused.
